Strengthening Peruvian Partnerships

Dr. Alfonso del Rio (Plant & Agroecosystem Sciences) was a 2023 recipient of the Krishna Ella Global Innovation Award. Alfonso used the CALS Global funding to travel to Peru twice to develop a proposal with our partner Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodriguez de Mendoza de Amazonas (UNTRM) for a Master of Science and Doctorate program in plant genetics, plant conservation and sustainable agriculture. The proposal was funded, and the team was award 17.5 million Peruvian soles (4,687,439 USD) to strengthen the doctoral program for Sustainable Development.

UNTRM’s proposal was selected at the national level as the first of eight winning proposals of the Interinstitutional Alliances competition for doctoral programs, PROCIENCIA 2023. The other international partners on this program include: North Carolina State University, Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Universidad del Norte de Colombia, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Universidad Nacional Agraria la Molina, Universidad Nacional de San Martín, and the Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria. All the partners will provide academic and research support through research centers, specialized laboratories, state-of-the-art equipment, and highly qualified teachers who will teach and provide thesis advising.

The doctoral program will offer a double degree, which allows students to be recognized internationally. This option will provide a broader and more diverse educational experience, allowing scholarship recipients to acquire additional skills and knowledge in areas complementary to their training. The award provides funding for the teaching, resources, thesis advising, internships, research development, and more for 38 students over the course of four years.
