Erica Phillips receives the 2024 Krishna Ella Global Innovation Award

Erica Phillips is the 2024 recipient of the Krishna Ella Global Innovation Award. The Krishna Ella Global Innovation Award seeks to catalyze “5i” projects led by CALS faculty and staff. 5i partnerships and projects are ones that are international, interdisciplinary, inclusive, innovative, and integrated (includes at least two of research, education, and outreach).

Erica Phillips is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. Her proposal, titled ‘Community-based Diabetes Management: Formative Research for Intervention Design’ will explore means to improve long-term adherence to dietary modification and medication when prescribed. This project will be conducted in Northern Tanzania and will seek partnership with the World Vegetable Crop Center in Arusha to incorporate home gardens for improved diets, in addition to health, nutrition and food safety practitioners. The focus will be on rural and urban poor populations with a focus on women, who are more frequently overweight and obese and have a higher risk for diabetes and also are responsible for household procurement and food preparation. This project aims to fill a gap in community-based management of an increasingly prevalent disease through skillful intervention design and testing through research and outreach.

A report will be produced at the end of the project with findings and proposed intervention to review and “stress test” with key informants, relevant government officials, and other regional health stakeholders. The findings will be published in an academic journal and an action plan will be created to develop financial support for future work.

Dr. Phillips will be collaborating with Dr. Mosha, a Lecturer at the Institute of Public Health at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University, and Dr. Kassim, a Senior Researcher in Food Safety and Nutrition at the Department of Food Biotechnology and Nutritional Sciences of the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology.
