KEYNOTE: Mark Green
Heartbreaking Challenges, Clear-Eyed Answers, Leadership Needed
Ambassador Mark Green (ret.) serves as the President, Director, and CEO of Washington, DC’s Wilson Center. Wilson is unique among American policy institutes in that it’s Congressionally chartered, scholarship driven, and fiercely non-partisan and independent. Green is also the author of the “Stubborn Things” blog (available through the Center’s website).
From 2017 to 2020, Green served as Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development. He has also served as President of the International Republican Institute, Executive Director of the McCain Institute, President of the Initiative for Global Development, and senior director at the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. Green served as the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania from mid-2007 to early 2009, as well as four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Wisconsin’s 8th District.
Green served on the Board of Directors of the Millennium Challenge Corporation during both the Obama and Trump Administrations, and has served on the Bush Institute’s Human Freedom Advisory Council and the Board of the Consensus for Development Reform. He holds a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. In 2012, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Georgetown University’s School of Nursing and Health Studies. He has received special honors from President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and President Ivan Duque of Colombia.

Derek Cabrera (PhD)
Thinking: the Crisis that Underlies Global Crises
Derek Cabrera (PhD, Cornell University) is a systems scientist and social entrepreneur and is internationally known for his work in systems thinking, systems leadership, and systems modeling. In 2021 he was inducted as a Member of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences (IASCYS) for outstanding contributions to the field. He currently teaches Systems Thinking and Modeling and Organizational Leadership and Design at Cornell University. He is senior scientist at Cabrera Research Lab, and Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of Plectica. Cabrera’s research has been profiled in peer-reviewed journals, trade magazines, and popular publications, and he is author of eight books including Systems Thinking Made Simple: New Hope for Solving Wicked Problems (winner of the 2017 AECT outstanding book award) and Flock Not Clock: Design, Align, and Lead to Achieve Your Vision. As a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow, he developed new techniques to model systems approaches in the evaluation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Cabrera was awarded the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ K. Patricia Cross Future Educational Leaders Award. Cabrera has developed and patented a suite of systems thinking tools for use in academia, government, and business, including many of Silicon Valley’s most innovative companies.

Registration is required. All are welcome to attend.
Poster Contest:
UW faculty, staff, post-docs, and students are invited to present a poster focused on describing activities that contribute to solving a global grand challenge. For the purposes of this event, global grand challenges will be based on the seventeen United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We seek contributions that focus on basic and applied research, education and outreach, and/or other aspects of international engagement. Three awards of up to $500 in prizes will be offered to one lead author for each selected poster.
Submissions are due by April 16, 2023.
Photo Contest:
UW faculty, staff, administrators, post-docs, and students are invited to submit a photo from their UW-Madison sponsored program, work, or initiative that exemplifies a global connection. This can be a connection to nature, culture, people, architecture, etc.
Entries will undergo an initial review based on how they capture the theme of connection, as well as their artistic expression, creativity, originality, image quality and photo caption description. Our panel of judges will review the photos and choose 15 finalists, which will be displayed at Global Day 2023. The 15 finalists will receive a canvas print of their photo. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photos will be determined based on the number of votes that each photo receives at the event and will receive up to $50!
Submissions are due by April 16, 2023.
Display Contest:
UW faculty, staff, post-docs, and students are invited to make a submission to the display contest that describes an international project affiliated with UW-Madison that contributes to solving a global grand challenge. For the purposes of this event, global grand challenges will be based on the seventeen United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Submissions should be a visual way to show the international project such as a video, narrated slideshow, work of art, etc. They must represent a project that included either research, education or outreach.

Resource Fair:
The resource fair will include representatives with informational materials from the following entities: Global Health Institute, Institute for Regional & International Studies, International Division, School of Education, School of Pharmacy, Study Abroad, UW-Madison Libraries, Visiting International Student Program, and the Wisconsin School of Business Global Programs
